On September 6th 2017, we will organize the international conference ‘Brick by brick, extending the Literacy houses approach’. During this conference, which will be chaired by Marianne van den Anker, we will share our experiences as well as those of our European counterparts. The central theme of the conference focuses on the building blocks that are required for establishing and structurally embedding a successful Literacy house.
The conference will consist of a plenary morning session with the following lectures given by key note speakers. First of all, Lisa Krolak (Head of documentation at UNESCO) will focus on the importance of adult education and life long learning. Secondly, Arjan Beune (Deputy director at Stichting Lezen & Schrijven) and Miriam Haagh (Alderman at the municipality of Breda) will look into the cooperation within Language for life West-Brabant. Finally, Maurice de Greef (Professor of learning effects concerning people with low (literacy) skills at the Free University of Brussels) will discuss the results of a recent study into the effects of language courses.
At the end of the plenary morning session, our European partners will briefly introduce themselves as well as the sessions they will deliver in the afternoon. Based on this information, all participants can then decide which sessions to attend. Below, you will find an overview of the various interactive afternoon sessions.
To conclude our international conference, Christine Clement (Managing consultant at CINOP) will interview Hans Hindriks (Policy Advisor at the ministry of OC&W), as well as representatives of all project partners. The focus within the interview will be on how the insights gained within the project will be incorporated into policy and daily practice.
More information about the final program, as well as biographies of all speakers will be available at EPALE.
The region of West-Brabant works hard on preventing and fighting illiteracy and delays in language development. Several years ago, the partnership Language for life West-Brabant was established. Within this partnership, ROC West-Brabant, the libraries, Cubiss Brabant and Stichting Lezen & Schrijven work closely together. A lot of knowledge and experience is shared on a national level. In addition, we look beyond our national borders and examine best practices and approaches used by European counterparts.
Within the Erasmus+ project ‘Extending the Literacy houses approach’, Language for life West-Brabant has recently visited partners in Norway, Ireland and Spain in order to find inspiration as to how they approach illiteracy and the improvement of language skills.
You can register for our international conference by filling in the form at the bottom of this page. Attendance is limited, so please register as soon as possible. The registration fee is €95,- per person.
This conference is organised by Nieuwe Veste, also on behalf of the libraries of West-Brabant, Kellebeek College / ROC West-Brabant and Cubiss Brabant.
